Puffin Class

Welcome to Puffin Class!

Mr Kent
Class Teacher

Mrs Breeze
Teaching Assistant

Puffin Class is home to our Year 1 children as they take the next exciting step in their learning journey. The transition from EYFS into Year 1 is a considerable one, but we make sure that our children continue to learn in a nurturing, supportive environment where learning is fun, purposeful and engaging.

Puffins are naturally curious, adventurous and resilient birds – qualities that we encourage in our children as they explore, discover and develop as learners. We want our children to be confident in trying new things, curious about the world around them and resilient when faced with a challenge.

A key focus in Year 1 is building strong foundations in phonics, reading, handwriting and number sense. We provide plenty of opportunities to practise and apply these important skills through practical, creative and enjoyable experiences, helping children to develop confidence and a genuine love of learning.

Mr Kent and Mrs Breeze create a caring and nurturing classroom where everyone feels valued, supported and encouraged to have a go. We look forward to a wonderful year of curiosity, discovery, friendship and fun as our children learn and grow together!

Latest Class News (updated 6/11/26)

It has been lovely to welcome our Puffins back after the half-term break! We have had a busy and exciting first week, settling back into our learning and starting a brand-new book in English: Room on the Broom. We began by describing the witch and taking part in a hot-seating activity where we imagined we were interviewing her and thought of lots of interesting questions to ask. We then let our imaginations run wild by creating our very own magical potions!

In Maths, we continued exploring parts and wholes, thinking about how a group of objects can make one whole. During Mastering Number, we have been learning about odd and even numbers, looking at pairs and spotting the odd one out. We used our fingers to help us work out whether a number was even, asking ourselves our familiar question: Does every finger have a friend?

In Science, we began our learning about magnets. We made predictions about which different objects we thought would be magnetic and then tested them to see if we were right.

In Art, we continued to take inspiration from Alma Thomas, creating our own pieces using bright, bold colours. In Computing, we explored the question What is technology? We learnt that technology is something made by humans to help us do something, and that it doesn't have to be electrical or involve a screen.

We have had a fantastic first week back and are already looking forward to next week, when we will be heading off on our exciting class trip to Monkton Nature Reserve. We can't wait to see what we discover!

This week's sounds: er (as in her), ir (as in girl), ur (as in surf)
High frequency words: could, where, were, down, now

Reading books were changed on Wednesday.
