Maple Class

Welcome to Maple Class!

Mr N Kent (class teacher)

Mrs A Breeze (TA)

Mrs F Dawson (TA)

Welcome to Maple Class, home to Years 3 and 4 at Wickhambreaux.

Just as maple trees change beautifully with the seasons, we encourage the children to embrace change, lead by example, and learn from their mistakes. Our class saying, "Making mistakes is how we learn!", reflects our belief in growing stronger and more vibrant with each new challenge.

Mr Kent, Mrs Dawson and Mrs Breeze aim to make learning fun, accessible and memorable. We hope your child enjoys the new challenges and approaches to learning that Key Stage 2 has to offer.

On this page you will find links to useful documents and resources that will give you an insight into the Lower Key Stage 2 curriculum. The unit overviews give a summary of the units of work that we cover over the year. You can also read our latest class news and see photos of what we've been getting up to.

Latest Class News (updated 27/2/26)

A very busy first week back!

In maths, we explored hundredths as decimal fractions, using the Gattegno chart to deepen our understanding of place value and the value of each digit. The visual layout really helped us see the relationship between tenths and hundredths.

In English, we experimented with onomatopoeia to write exciting firework shape poems — full of bangs, crackles, and whooshes! Do take a look at our colourful display in the corridor. We are also nearly at the end of The Firework-Maker’s Daughter and are very excited to discover whether Lila and Lalchand win the competition — we’ll finish the story on Monday.

This term, we have a real focus on handwriting, particularly developing neat, joined cursive writing in our final pieces. We’ve launched a Handwriting Hall of Fame, and each week one child in Year 3 and one in Year 4 will be inducted in recognition of fantastic effort, noticeable progress, or consistent presentation. Congratulations to Ava and Raisa for this week!

In geography, we learnt about volcanoes, identifying their different parts and producing clearly labelled diagrams. In science, we began learning about solutions, carrying out an experiment to test whether salt dissolves faster in cold or hot water. We linked this to our understanding of particle energy, discussing why temperature makes a difference.

In R.E., we learnt about the Guru Granth Sahib, exploring why it is so important in Sikhism. We’re looking forward to our upcoming visit to the Gurdwara — the information letter was emailed out this week.

Year 3 began their new computing, starting programming using Scratch. In maths, they practised giving directions on a grid, and in art they studied the Japanese sculptor Yayoi Kusama, sketching her work before creating their own clay pumpkins. These will be painted next week. We hope Year 4 enjoyed their first Friday at Forest School!

Everyone enjoyed pancakes this week, ordering them in French and requesting different toppings — merci to Madame Holland for organising!

There is lots to look forward to next week as it’s Children’s Book Week. Remember, every entry into the potato competition will earn 10 house points!

Homework

This week's homework is on maths.co.uk. This is on hundredths and tenths.

This week our spelling focus has been words with the prefix re-. Our focus words have been: redo, return, refresh, redecorate, rebound, reappear, review, replay, reaction, revenge. You should have received your child's Spelling Shed logins - children can play games focusing on this week's words. Also handwriting the words at home is good practice.

Don't forget to play TTRS! All children can achieve a rock status by playing studio at least ten times. Regular practice at home is really beneficial: just 3–5 minutes, 4 or 5 times a week, makes a real difference!
